چکیده

We present an optimal parallel implementation of a meldable priority queue based on the binomial heap data structure. Our main result is an interesting application of the parallel computation of carry bits in a full adder logic to binomial heaps, thus optimizing the parallel time complexity of the Union (often called melding) of two queues. The Union operation as well as Insert, Min, Extract-Min and Multiple-Insert require doubly logarithmic time and are work-optimal, employing p 2 H…log n= log log n† processors on the EREW±PRAM model. Parallel algorithms for Delete and Decrease-Key operations work by postponing the global e€ect of a node deletion/update, and achieve doubly logarithmic time and work-optimality in the amortized sense. Binomial Heaps and Skew Binomial Heaps

We implement and prove correct binomial heaps and skew binomial heaps. Both are data-structures for priority queues. While binomial heaps have logarithmic findMin, deleteMin, insert, and meld operations, skew binomial heaps have constant time findMin, insert, and meld operations, and only the deleteMin-operation is logarithmic. This is achieved by using skew links to avoid cascading linking on ...

Layered Heaps

We introduce a framework for reducing the number of comparisons performed in the deletion and minimum deletion operations for priority queues. In particular, we give a priority queue with constant cost per insertion and minimum finding, and logarithmic cost with at most logn + O(log logn) 1 comparisons per deletion and minimum deletion, improving over the bound of 2 logn + O(1) comparisons for ...

Theoretical and practical efficiency of priority queues

This is a study of the theoretical and practical efficiency of priority queues. The priority queue is an old and well studied data structure on which a great deal of theoretical and practical work has already been done. A priority queue can be realised in many ways, some of the most commonly used data structures for this are binary heaps and binomial queues. In this thesis the efficiency of pri...

A simpler implementation and analysis of Chazelle's soft heaps

Chazelle (JACM 47(6), 2000) devised an approximate meldable priority queue data structure, called Soft Heaps, and used it to obtain the fastest known deterministic comparison-based algorithm for computing minimum spanning trees, as well as some new algorithms for selection and approximate sorting problems. If n elements are inserted into a collection of soft heaps, then up to εn of the elements...

An Efficient Construction Algorithm for a Class of Implicit Double-Ended Priority Queues

Priority queues and double-ended priority queues are fundamental data types in Computer Science, and various data structures have been proposed to implement them. In particular, diamond deques, interval heaps, min-max-pair heaps, and twin-heaps provide implicit structures for double-ended priority queues. Although these heap-like structures are essentially the same when they are presented in an...
